That’s the new answer, after Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt beat his own world record in the men's 100 meters with a new record 9.58 seconds. He break this record at the world track and field championships in Berlin.
At this 2009 World Championships in Berlin, Bolt eased through the 100 m heats, clocking the fastest ever pre-final performance of 9.89 seconds. The final was the first time Bolt and Gay had met in the season, and the American ran 9.71 seconds, 0.02 off Bolt's world record run in Beijing. However, Bolt finished some distance ahead of Gay, improving the world record to 9.58 seconds to win his first World Championship gold medal. Taking over a tenth of a second off the previous best mark, this was the largest ever margin of improvement in the 100 m world record since the beginning of electronic timing. Another Jamaican Asafa Powell was third in a time of 9.84.
Usain Bolt Achievement
Bolt's personal best of 9.58 seconds in the 100 meters is the fastest ever legal time. Bolt also holds the second fastest time of 9.69 seconds, the current Olympic record. Tyson Gay recorded a time of 9.68 second at the 2008 US Olympic Trials, but was aided with a tail wind of 4.1 m/s, exceeding the legal limit of 2.0 m/s set by the IAAF and nullifying its inclusion as a world record. Obadele Thompson's run of 9.69 s in 1996 is also not recognized as it was aided by a 5.0 m/s tail wind.
Bolt's personal best of 19.30 s in the 200 metres is both a world record and Olympic record as well. This was recorded at the 2008 Beijing Games against a headwind of 0.9 m/s, breaking Michael Johnson's previous world record and Olympic record of 19.32 s. After Bolt and Johnson's record setting runs, the next fastest time is almost three tenths of a second slower: Tyson Gay's personal best of 19.58 s. Bolt is the only non-United States sprinter in the IAAF top five.
The Jamaican relay team including Bolt, set the 4x100 metres world and Olympic records at the 2008 Olympics with a time of 37.10 seconds. This is the only run in the IAAF top ten performances which was not set by an American team.
